Berrill grabs the winner

NH MAIRTIN O’CONNELLS 3-11 3-9

O’CONNELL’S face the possibility of playing their football in Division 2 next season as a late Brian Berrill goal denied the bottom club a much-needed victory. This was the second week in succession that a late goal had turned victory into defeat and with just one game remaining it looks as though relegation is on the cards.

The O’Connell’s got off to a great start when Stuart Reynolds found Conor McGill and he rounded his man before firing into the net. Things got even better a minute later when Conor Culligan passed to Cian Doyle who made a run along the end line and somehow found the back of the net from an awkward angle. Sam Mulroy got the visitors first point of the game but a Niall Conlon point kept six between the sides. However, the Mairtins were soon level as a long high ball in to the square from Padraig McDonagh was flicked to the net by Brian Berrill.

Further points from Campbell and Mulroy saw their team take the lead for the first time five minutes before the break. But the home side rallied and got their third goal of the game when a Jason Carroll ball in the box was flicked into the path of Conor Culligan who was alert enough to fist his blocked shot into the net to help his side lead by 3-4 to 0-6 at the break.

Robert Quigley increased the home team’s lead to five points after the start of the second half but the Mairtins hit a purple patch and added 1-3 to their score without reply, the points coming from Mulroy, Campbell and Conor Whelan and the goal from Sam Mulroy after a pass from Brian Berrill to put them ahead by one point.

Doyle equalised for the O’Connell’s but substitute JP Rooney got the Jocks back in front again with a fine score. The home team then landed the next three points from Stuart Reynolds, a Cian Doyle free and the other from Robert Quigley to push them two in front with fewer than seven minutes to go. A Francis McCullough free reduced the margin to one with five minutes to go.

With under three minutes to go the visitors produced the move of the game with a series of passes from well inside their own half that ended with a simple tap in for Brian Berrill into an empty net.
