NAOMH Fionnbarra recorded a good win over St Mochtas in the Division 2 League at John Markey Park, Ballygassan on Friday evening to keep their slim chance of avoiding the relegation play off alive.

The Barrs made the brighter start and had a 0-4 to 0-3 lead after the first quarter with Oisin McGee grabbing a couple of scores for the home side before Declan Byrne responded for the visitors.

A point from the Louth Village men levelled the scores but this was short lived as Darren McConnon scrambled home a goal after a long ball into the square.

The Mochtas replied with a point, but yet again the Barrs scored a goal, this time an instinctive flick to the net with a first time shot from Bernard Osborne.

Two more points from the Mochs and one for the Finbarrs finished the half leaving the score at the break 2-5 to 0-7 in favour of the Barrs.

The hosts further stretched their advantage with three early points in the second half including an excellent score from Bryan Sharkey after a move that ran the length of the field.

With a six point lead the Togher men looked comfortable at this stage but the Louth Village side showed some fight and battled hard to gain dominance around the middle of the field.

They slowly ate into the Finbarrs lead thanks to three Declan Byrne points as the Barrs could only muster a single in reply from Conor Osborne, leaving them four points ahead going into the final quarter.

The Mochtas were pressing hard in the final quarter to reduce the deficit however wayward shooting and good Finbarrs defending kept scores for the Louth Village men to the minimum.
