Slane/Rathkenny begin campaign with a bang

CHAMPIONSHIP debutants Slane/Rathkenny began their Coca-Cola Junior C Championship campaign with a hard-fought but impressive victory over Seneschalstown in Slane.
The home side got to a good start and dominated the early exchanges with points from Caoimhe McKenna and a free by Blathnaid Rock to go 0-3 to 0-0 up. They were also guilty of a few wides and this allowed Seneschalstown to claw their way back into the game.
Eimear O’Carroll had two points on the board for Seneschalstown and then Laura Burke brought the sides level late in the half.
However, Caoimhe McKenna was on target with a free from a tight angle to give Slane/Rathkenny a slender advantage at half-time.
Again the home side started the stronger in the second half with a purple patch that left them with a comfortable lead.
Caoimhe McKenna struck for two goals and Siabhra Reilly fired over a point which moved Slane/Rathkenny eight points clear.
Seneschalstown hit back with a couple of points but they were left with a mountain to climb following Sheila Downey’s opportunistic goal.
Substitute Jennifer Downey added a fourth goal shortly after coming on and then found the net again before the finish.
Seneschalstown went in search of goals in the closing stages and were rewarded with Roisin Commins powering a shot to the net wile a long range effort from Eimear O’Carroll went all the way right at the death.
