Conor nets silver medal at championships
THE first weekend of July saw the commencement of the national Track and Field Championships.
Day one took place on Saturday when the junior and under 23 championships took place. Conor Durnin, who is enjoying a very successful season, was once again standing on the podium with a silver medal hanging around his neck this time as he finished in second place with a leap of 13.30 metres in the under-23 Triple Jump.
Day 2 took place on Sunday when the under 9-11 Pairs competition took place. The St Peters club had one pair competing with Lucy Brennan and Isabel Fitzpatrick having qualified from the Leinster Championships in June.
Both girls performed very well on the big stage with jumps of 3.34m and 3.49m respectively and although they were outside the medals the experience of qualifying and competing in the nationals will be invaluable to both of these fine young athletes. On Thursday last Drogheda and District AC hosted a graded meeting at Lourdes Stadium and the club had three athletes in action.
Club chairman Brendan Rogers finished first in the the 800m ‘D’ Race in a time of 2.38.2 and was also first in the 5kg shot with a putt of 8.07m.
Andrew Rogers was fourth in the ‘E’ race in a time of 3.05.3 and ran 13.29 in the 3000m race.
Tom McGrane was also in action in the 7.62kg shot and with a season best putt of 9.5m finished in first place.
