Young Sophie takes doubles by storm

-

GREENHILLS senior players were rattled in the Summer League doubles last Thursday night as juvenile Sophie Thornberry raced through the field, closing the gap at the top to three points.

In the first match in category A Claire Woods and Eugene McKenna took on Gertie Griffin and Olive Clutterbuck. Gertie and Olive made a lightning start and at ones stage led by four shots, but their opponents pushed on to record a superb victory.

The second match in category A between Paddy Griffin/Sean Donnelly and Karl Thornberry/ Tom Devin also went right to the wire. After a see-saw affair, Paddy and Sean pushed ahead late on and despite a gallant effort by Karl and Tom to claw back the deficit, they just came up short.

In the third match in Category A Sadie Campbell and Jack Howell took on Josephine Moran and Sophie Thornberry. Amazingly Jack and Sadie prevailed despite not being able to register a score in the first four ends.

In category B Paddy Griffin and Alice Leonard stormed into the lead against Tom Devin and Ciara Floyd. The latter pair dragged themselves into contention, but Paddy and Alice finished strongly to take the spoils.

Val Haggins and Gertie Griffin started like a house on fire against Megan Devin and Eugene McKenna, opening a sixshot lead. Megan and Eugene were left with a mountain to climb and while they cut the gap to three and made life very uncomfortable for their opponents, Val and Gertie held on for the victory.

The final match saw Oliver Clutterbuck and Jimmy Flood take on Karl Thornberry and Anna Farrell. In this one Oliver and Jimmy started well, but there was just one shot between the sides heading into the last end. Oliver and Jimmy held their nerve, however, to take the victory.

Congratulations to juvenile Ciara Floyd and Colm Minnick senior on winning the A Open and also Sophie Thornberry, who was runner-up in the B Final, and semi-finalist Megan Devin in the Redeemer last Tuesday night.

Congratulations to juvenile member Ciara Floyd and Chloe Dykstra who celebrated their birthdays recently.

Times of play are 7 to 8pm on Thursdays for juvenile players and 8 to 10.30pm on Thursdays for seniors.
