Gers hit heights

5-13 1-7

-

GERALDINES hosted St Kevin’s in the Senior Championship round robin series last Sunday and emerged victorious on a flattering scoreline, having been behind at half-time.

In a low-scoring first half the Geraldines flattered to deceive as they struck the crossbar in the first minute, but it was the Louth pair of Paula Murray and Susan Byrne who took control, contributing to the score of 1-5 for St Kevin’s as the Geraldines managed a single point from a free by Lorna Moriarty on six minutes.

But for the extremely hard work of the Geraldines defence St Kevin’s might well have had a substantial half-time lead.

Their only other score, a goal, came in injury time as Roisin Soraghan reduced their deficit to leave the half-time score St Kevin’s 1-5 Geraldines 1-1.

The second half saw a different Geraldines team enter the pitch as their own representative on the Louth team, Rebecca Carr, immediately got in on the action with a point in the opening minute.

Geraldines laid siege on the St Kevin’s half and added a further six points to take a three-point lead, with scores from Carr (3), Roisin Soraghan, Sorcha McCooey and Victoria Prendergast, before St Kevin’s registered their first score of the half on 12 minutes.

Geraldines immediately took the game to St Kevin’s again and added points from Prendergast and Carr, followed by a goal from Moriarty, before the Kevin’s got their second and last point in the 18th minute.

The Haggardstown/Blackrock outfit again pinned St Kevin’s back and finished the game by adding three goals and three points, and but for the goalkeeping skills of the Kevins’ Cliodhna Duffy the goal tally could have been a lot more.

Substitute Katie Todd came to life in the second half, adding two goals and a point to the score, with points also from Rebecca Carr and Lorna Moriarty before Victoria Prendergast sealed the victory with a goal in the final minute.
