Boyne sports day a huge success

-

BOYNE AC hosted their annual open sports day recently, and yet again it was a huge success.

Word has obviously spread that this is one of the finest track & field events on the calendar, as athletes from far and wide travelled to the Lourdes Stadium to take part - from as far away as Cork, Westmeath, Laois and Newry - to compete against more local athletes, with representation from almost all local clubs.

Once again, the weather was onside, as more than 250 boys and girls battled it out over a variety of track and field disciplines.

The excellent organisation of the day by the host club, and the much appreciated help from all the volunteers, made for yet another thoroughly enjoyable day.

Once again, Boyne athletes excelled in all their endeavours and featured heavily on the medal winners’ podium, rising to the challenges laid down by some fierce competitors.

In the boys events, Callum Byrne got things under way for the club, with a silver in the 60m and a bronze in the 200m, while Oliver Carolan took silver in his u9 60m and 300m.

Shea O’Donnell took gold in the u10 Turbo Javelin and silver in the u10 500m, while Alex Devine took gold in the u11 80m sprint.

Paddy price had a great day as he took gold in the u11 500m and silver in the 80m, while Aaron Fennell took silver in the 500m, bronze in the long jump and threw a huge 34.12m to take gold out of age in the u12 Turbo Javelin.

Adam Byrne showed off his sprinting talent with a win in the u12 100m, while Neil Culhane was just behind to take silver and also took gold in the 600m race. Max Kingston threw well to take bronze in the u12 Turbo Javelin.

Euan Canniffe swept the boards with a win in the u14 Javelin and u15 Long Jump, and a silver in the u14 Shot Putt.

Harry Carolan took silver in the u16 100m, while Tadgh Everitt Thompson ran a great race to take gold in the u16 800m, as did teammate Ruarcan O’Gibne in the u17 800m race.

Eddie Kennedy took bronze in a fierce junior mens 100m race, while Cormac O’Gibne also took bronze in the 800m race.

Not to be outdone by the boys, the girls from Boyne also gave plenty of medal winning performances, with Juliette Hurley getting things off to a start with a silver in the u8 60m, and just behind saw Saidhbh Cleary take the bronze.

Chloe Cooney took bronze in the longer 200m race, while in the u9 events, Shola Lawrence dominated with a win in both the 60m and 300m races.

Saran Meite stayed true to form with another double gold in the u12 100m and 600m races and also took silver in the Turbo Javelin, while in the u13 races Pelumi Fanifosi took bronze in the 100m sprint and silver in the 600m race, with Caer Ni Ghibne just behind to take bronze.

Finally, Kate Kelly was in fine form as she claimed silver in both the u14 Shot Putt and Javelin.

Boyne AC would like to thank all the athletes and their families from all the various clubs who took part and a huge thanks to all those who helped out on the day.

Entries are now open for the Harry Mallon memorial 4 mile road race which takes place on 16th September.
