Cordoned off house is causing road issues

-

LOUTH County Council has been asked to immediately intervene to address a health and safety issue which has arisen on Donore Road as a direct consequence of a fire which destroyed an abandoned building at Cherrymount directly facing the bus station.

“In short I have requested council to instruct the owners of the property to have the building demolished and the site cleared. This is not the first time the building has been set on fire. The building has also been the subject of numerous incidents of anti social behaviour. I believe that having witnessed so many incidents involving this building it is necessary to take the action which I have requested,’ aid Cllr Paul Bell.

“In response to my request council engineers have assessed the structure as there are genuine concerns that the building may collapse. At present the front of the building has been fenced off to protect pedestrians.

‘Unfortunately this specific action is leading to an additional hazard as pedestrians are forced to step off the footpath and walk along the road. This situation is unsatisfactory and in my opinion dangerous as Donore Road and in particular the bus station area is extremely busy with traffic movement.

‘I have personally witnessed near misses as school children and senior citizens are stepping off the path to cross the road. I expect Council to issue an engineers report in the days ahead” Bell concluded.
