Cille’s set sights on a double

-

greater days ahead.

Cille’s were slow starters in this encounter and found themselves four points in arrears after 12 minutes. However, once they got into their stride there was little doubt about the outcome and by half-time Colm Nally’s charges had turned it around, leading 1-10 to 0-6.

Once they settled the winners were strides ahead of their opponents in most aspects of the play and would have won by more but for some wayward shooting.

Castletown, already out of championship contention and short a number of key players, saw their challenge fizzle out after that bright start. St Colmcille’s cut through their rearguard with ease, while the Castletown attack lacked ideas and too often just launched high balls into their full forward line.

Midfielder Kevin Ross pointed Castletown ahead within a minute of the start and Shane Hoey and Barry Smith added further scores, before Graham Reilly blasted over the bar for the Cille’s opening point.

Wing back Hoey registered his second point and Smith then pointed a free to make it 0-5 to 0-1 in favour of Castletown.

At the other end Ben Brennan drove a goal effort wide and David O’Byrne also failed to hit the target. Graham Reilly again found the range and that was the start of a spell of Cille’s dominance during which they out-scored their opponents 1-9 to a single point.

The goal arrived when James Conlon picked out the unmarked Reilly in front of the posts and the county star made no mistake from close range. That left it 1-6 to 0-5 and Jack Reynolds, Conlon and Brennan (’45) all added points before Tommy Smith replied with a point for Castletown.

Cille’s struck a further four points in the third quarter before Kevin Ross had Castletown off the mark in the second half on 43 minutes. The game was over as a contest at that stage and substitute Donal Meagher put the icing on the cake with his side’s second goal on 57 minutes.

After the match Meath county treasurer Jim Mullery presented the Corn Na Boinne to Cille’s captain Ben Brennan.
