DROGHEDA United Under-17s moved well clear of the Northern Division’s bottom club Longford Town when recording a good victory over fourth-placed Sligo Rovers at a rainy United Park on Sunday.

What was most impressive about Drogheda’s performance was the good teamwork and calmness on the ball, even when they came under a lot of Sligo pressure in the second half.

The Drogs took the lead on 14 minutes when Eoin Broughan sent over an immaculate corner from the right and Dylan Rice rose highest to head the ball into the top right-hand corner.

Backed up by some solid midfield work, the Drogs were looking dangerous up front, with Tom Adeyinka having his best game of the season and linking well with Aaron Mc Nally, and it was this combination which gave the Drogs their second goal on 28 minutes when McNally’s cross was expertly dispatched to the net by Adeyinka.

From that point until the half-time whistle the Drogs defended well and passed the ball out of defence with confidence.

It was inevitable that the Bit O’Red would press the home defence in the second half, but with Luke McNally and Rice in great form at the back and Cameron Brennan, Paddy Conway and Broughan strong and decisive in midfield, it was the Drogs who came closest to adding to the their lead on the hour when Gavin Taylor saw a great shot from the right just slide past the post.
