table and it shows Waterford, Cabinteely and Athlone are the three weakest teams, and we struggled in every one of those 12 games against them with the exception of the home game against Cabinteely where we won 4-0.

‘It’s just a mental weakness in our team, I feel. We spoke about it again and again and again, but obviously the penny hasn’t dropped.

‘We had two good chances before they scored, and when they got the goal we huffed and puffed and could not break them down. I made substitutions that I thought would have an impact and it didn’t work.’

While the opportunity to secure a play-off place wasn’t taken, Mahon still appears relaxed about Drogheda’s prospects despite having to face champions Limerick and then UCD in their final two fixtures.

‘I’m delighted that our last two games are Limerick and UCD,’ he insisted. ‘It could not have worked out better because they are the hardest two games we will have and on past experience we should be able to get something from those games.’

The squad will have a rare Friday off this week before reassembling for training on Sunday, and the break is a bonus for defenders Kevin Farragher and Lloyd Buckley who are both recovering from injury.

However, Gareth McCaffrey will definitely miss the trip to Limerick next week as he serves the last match of his suspension.
