Farewell to our sporting hero Angela Carr, queen of the badminton court

- By HUBERT MURPHY

DROGHEDA has lost one of its greatest sports people with the death of former Irish badminton star Angela Carr (pictured).

Part of the national set up for many seasons, Angela was regarded as one of the country’s foremost players after taking the sport by storm as a 19-year-old.

The former Sacred Heart girl became Leinster Senior champion in 1987 and won back to back Irish doubles titles with Eugene McKenna in 1989 and 1990. With her sister, Sonya, they were also well known on the international stage.

In a statement this week, the Leinster Badminton Branch said the sport was ‘shocked and saddened’ to learn of the death of Angela.

‘Angela represented the Leinster Senior Badminton team and also represented the Irish Badminton team. She will be sadly missed by many in the Leinster Badminton community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Angela’s family at this sad time. RIP Angela,’ they stated.

Having also served as a board member for Drogheda Homeless Aid, she was also regarded as one of the country’s top businesswomen, spending nearly two decades as Head of Resourcing for a large banking group. She was also a published author.

She was featured in IMAGE magazine in 2010 as one of Ireland’s Top Business Women and was included in Irish Tatler’s (Business Annual) 1000+ Women of Influence Directory. She founded Carr McCrea & Associates some years ago.

Angela is survived by her husband John (McCrea) and children, PJ and Julia, her mother Teresa, sister Sonya, her mother-inlaw Pamela, brothers-in-law Neil, Mark and Les, sisters-in-law Jennifer and Samantha, her godson Alex, nephews Andrew and James, relatives and friends.

Her Funeral Service is on Wednesday at 2pm at St Peter’s Church of Ireland, Peter St. with burial afterwards in adjoining churchyard. She was predeceased by her dad Michael.
