Combination find key to success

followed by a well-worked move from the backline which resulted in a goal for Dean Bourton.

The Fechins tagged on a couple of scores late on to leave the sides level at the break, 1-1 to 0-04.

The second half was a physical affair as both teams tackled ferociously around the middle third.

The tackling from the backline of the amalgamated side kept the Fechins at bay while the attack continued to add scores. Kindlon knocked over a difficult free while Dillon Farrell got on the end of a sweeping move to slot over.

Credit to the Fechins men, however, who stayed in touching distance against the breeze with some excellent points from distance.

Gerry Garland then took control of the midfield with some stunning turnovers and precise passing, which led to important scores from the workmanlike Ciaran McMahon and substitute Craig Lennon.

A blistering turn of pace from Bourton set up Cormac Smyth for the decisive goal, as the corner forward timed his run to flick the ball past the outstanding Fechin’s goalkeeper.

Bourton and McMahon added points while the defence continued to hold their opponents at bay with the full back line of Jack Lynch, Nicky Browne and Andrew Lennon all superb.

As the Fechins threw everything at their opponents to get back into the game, Owen Lennon, Conor Garland and Browne put their bodies on the line repeatedly.

A late goal wasn’t enough for the Fechins after a huge effort, so it was left to captain Darren Clarke to raise the trophy for the Mochtas/Kilkerly/Malachy’s side who finished the league unbeaten.
