Bannon off to a flyer with Town

RECENT signing Shaun Bannon put the seal on an encouraging win for Drogheda Town as they hauled themselves away from the Division 1B danger zone on Sunday morning.

Robbie Horgan’s charges had conceded nine goals in their previous two outings, but on this occasion they looked more solid at the back against a Corduff side playing only their fourth game of the season.

The lead goal, scored after 25 minutes, was credited to Emmanuel Santos, but all the hard work was done by Sean Callaghan who came out the right side of three 50/50 tackles in just a few seconds before setting up Santos who slotted past the Corduff keeper.

Town doubled their advantage on 55 minutes when Callaghan swung a corner kick into the six-yard area and Lee McGuinness diverted the ball into the roof of the net from almost on the goalline, with the Corduff keeper stranded.

However, the hosts hauled themselves back into the game when Town were penalised for an offside decision at the other end, and while they argued with the match official Corduff sent the ball long over the two centre-halves.

Town keeper Vinny O’Hare considered coming off his line to gather, but his mobility was reduced after picking up an injury in the first half and Corduff’s centre-forward took advantage of the situation to nip in and score.

Bannon, the former Drogheda United Under-19s player, was then sprung from the bench and after almost scoring with his first touch the ball was swung in by McGuinness once more and Bannon finished to the top corner with his left foot.

Town saw it out comfortably after that, and Horgan was reasonably satisfied with his team’s work.

‘I actually didn’t think we played that well,’ he said. We’ve played a lot better this season and not got anything out of games, but a scrappy win is better than no win and we saw it out quite comfortably in the end.’
