Championship not Lack-ing in entertainment

-

THERE was great excitement at Greenhills last Thursday night as the senior championship singles produced some excellent bowls.

In the first match of the night Tony Lacken was in supreme form against Anna McKenna, storming into a five-shot lead. Tempting as it might have been to throw in the towel, Anna stayed positive and chipped away at the deficit, reducing it to two, but Tony turned on the style again in the last two ends, taking the victory by four shots.

Experienced stalwarts Eugene Mc Kenna and Tom Devin went head-to-head in the second match of the night. Eugene was on his game from the start, storming into a five-shot lead, but Tom’s last bowl into the head in the fifth end produced a favourable wick of his opponent’s bow, taking three shots back in an instant. Eugene held firm initially, but Tom found his rhythm to square the match after the eighth end and he closed the game out to secure a two-shot win.

In the third match Sadie Campbell made a bright start against Frances Fleming and it ultimately proved decisive. Sadie opened a four-shot lead, and while Frances managed to reduce it to two on two separate occasions, Sadie took control in the last two ends to take the victory.

The last match of the night between Sean Donnelly and Valerie Barron was expected to be tight and that’s exactly how it turned out. The lead changed hands several times, but Valerie put some daylight on the scoreboard, opening a three-shot lead with two ends remaining. Sean had to dig deep, but he reduced the deficit to one after the penultimate end and kept that momentum going to win out by two shots.

Congratulations to juvenile member Karl Thornberry who celebrated his 13th birthday recently - a great day was had by family.
