Woman mugged in vicious early morning attack

-

A local karate club is offering free self defence classes following a spate of muggings, including one last week on a woman in her 60s.

The woman was attacked in the Chrushrod Avenue area of town shortly after 9.20am last Thursday morning.

The terrified woman was assaulted and mugged shortly after leaving her home in the local area. She was knocked to the ground by a lone male who then made off with her handbag, which contained a sum of money.

A spokesperson for the gardaí said the woman was shocked and bruised after her ordeal but had not received any serious injuries. He appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

As a result of this and a number of other incidents in recent weeks, Philip Nulty from DS Karate has organised a ladies only six week self defence course.

The course will take place in The Special Olympics Club at Crosslanes starting on Friday, November 4th from 7pm to 8pm and every Friday for the following six weeks.

The course is free and CocaCola International Services have given a donation towards the running costs of the class.

‘Last year when we organised the same thing and we had 40 women of all ages attending,’ said Philip. ‘We are hoping a lot of women will take up this offer no matter what their age and condition are.

‘All they need is a track suit or loose clothing,’ he said.

Anyone interested in taking part can book a place with Rosemary on 086 1060008.
