Sickening attack on animal welfare centre

- Fiona MAGENNIS

THE Drogheda Animal Rescue (DAR) centre has been broken into and vandalised for the third time this year.

Staff were shocked and upset to once again find their premises damaged by mindless thugs and were left with a major clean up operation after those responsible smashed the glass in the door at the front of the property.

Volunteers at the local charity have been left extremely frustrated after this the third break in at the facility, which does not hold any cash or medication.

A post on DAR’s Facebook page read: ‘It is with deep sadness and regret that we are forced to have to write this post. For the third time this year our rescue centre has been broken in to. For the third time this year someone or a group of people took it upon themselves to force their way into our property causing intentional harm and damage.

‘Our centre serves only as a holding facility for desperate cases, for cats that have nowhere else to go. Our centre is a haven and a point of care for cats that would otherwise be suffering with untreated injuries, in pain or having their babies in ditches. That’s it, we do not hold cash or medication on the premises which has forced us to beg the question, why? Why would someone think fit to cause damage to our centre?’

The post went on to wonder why anyone would cause such pointless vandalism for no reason, leaving the charity with a large bill to pay as a result.

‘We are run completely on donations so are in a difficult position yet again. Thankfully on all 3 occasions none of our animals were harmed and for that we are grateful...DAR have been in existence for almost 20 years and have a group of volunteers that will not be shaken. We will continue to strive to give care and a voice to animals which have none.’
