Gardai launch new business watch scheme

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

DROGHEDA Gardai have launched a new Business Watch system to tackle robberies and thefts in local shops and centres.

Already Garda Ursula Clarke has been appointed the liaison officer and it is believed the campaign has already witnessed some successes.

It’s the first time the town has seen such a service and its aim is to combat crime at all levels.

A new text alert warning system is being put into operation, offering advice to retailers who can also report any problems as they arise.

It is felt the system will be of huge benefit in the run up to Christmas when gangs target certain premises.

‘ The feedback from the business community has been very positive and we have further meetings planned this week on it,’ Supt Andrew Watters told the Drogheda Independent at Monday’s launch of the new Highlands Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

‘We now have a full-time garda on the business watch, which is a big plus,’ he added.

There is a drive to clean up West Street’s image and to halt the episodes of shoppers being harassed as they go about their business.

Monday’s event at Nano Reid’s saw the full launch of the Highlands scheme.

It arose after a number of robberies in the estate.

A committee was formed and they have won the support of the estate to commence the new scheme.
