‘At this stage teams should fear us’

-

GOAL hero Stephen Fisher was typically bullish after O’Mahony’s pulled off one of their biggest coups on Sunday.

‘We’re over the moon, what a performance, ‘ Fisher said. ‘We knew it would be a dogfight and no-one gave us a chance, but deep down we felt we could do it.

‘We prepared well and Alan had his homework done to a tee. We had to dig deep again, but I never once felt that we would come out with anything other than a victory.’

The speedy winger’s strike opened a seven-point lead for O’Mahony’s, but in the end it proved absolutely crucial as Sarsfields rallied strongly in the final quarter.

‘I was delighted to get the goal and it came when we were four or five up which gave us a cushion, but we needed it in the end. I was due one because I haven’t scored a goal all year.’

After adjourning with a two-point lead at the interval, O’Mahony’s pledged to kick on in the third quarter, and while Craven had urged them not to take their foot off the pedal, they made life tough for themselves once more.

‘They came at us and Alan told us half-time not to sit back if we went ahead, but we did and let them back into it. But we’ve shown over the last three years that we don’t give up without a fight. We seem to prefer a fight than to win it easy and we showed that again.

‘It was a terrific display by our backline. Missing Kevin Brennan was a blow, but Benny was brilliant and that full back line and half back line never let us down. Every time the ball dropped in a yellow shirt seemed to come out with it.

‘We were very confident. What team will come here and walk all over us?

‘We’ve shown what we can do and we don’t fear anybody. In fact, maybe at this stage a few teams should be fearing us.’

Fisher paid tribute to the young guns up front, who showed serious composure in a frantic finale.

‘I turned to Ben when we were in that bad patch and just said ‘keep the scoreboard ticking’ and he and Killer popped up at the end to keep the pressure on them.’

Next up is Rhode and Fisher insists O’Mahony’s are relishing the chance to prove people wrong again.

‘We’re quietly confident we can go all the way. With this squad of players, the belief we have and the managment behind us, there’s no stopping us now.’
