ST Fechins U16 hurlers created a bit of history when winning the inaugural Ulster U16 club hurling league in Ballinlough on Saturday.

Both teams had topped their respective groups with Lisbellaw starting as favourites having been unbeaten throughout the league. The favourites tag seemed justified when playing with a slight breeze in the first half they rattled in two goals in the first five minutes.

But Fechins responded to play some scintillating hurling ando claw their way back into the game. Their endeavours were rewarded when Ryan Walsh goaled after some great interplay by midfielders Dylan Tiernan and Paul Mc Evoy. A brace of frees cut the deficit to the minimum.

Lisbellaw then hit another purple patch scoring three points on the spin but not to be undone the Fechin’s replied with another two points from Dan McCabe and Sean Kerrisk to leave the half time score St Fechins 1-4 Lisbellaw 2-3.

St Fechin’s tore into from the second half and took a lead which they would not relinquish again when inspirational captain Daniel Morgan played a through ball to Walsh who buried the ball to the roof of the net.

Things soon got better when Walsh completed his hat-trick after some great work by Eoghan Ryan and O’ Neill.

Lisbellaw were not going to lie down and knocked over the next three points and were only denied a couple of goals by great work from Luke Black in the Fechins goals and the vigilance of Zac Lennon, David Lally and Neal Boylan in the full back line.

Walsh knocked over a couple of more frees leaving Lisbellaw to close out the scoring when a close range free was diverted over the bar.
