NEWFOUNDWELL will enter this week’s FAI Junior Cup fifth-round draw alongside teams from across the country after finishing strongly to see off AUL club Kippure in Finglas on Sunday morning.

The first half was a fairly even contest and ‘Well keeper Bryan Smith had to pull off one excellent save to keep his team on level terms, but after starting the game by pumping too many direct balls to their forwards the away side started to play.

The ploy bore fruit in the 40th minute when John Kermode made ground down the left flank and crossed in for Emmet Carolan to finish to the bottom corner of Kippure’s net.

Newfoundwell had some defending to do at the beginning of the second half, but then Kippure pressed the self-destruct button in the 55th minute when one of their players received a straight red card for dissent.

‘Well’s second goal quickly followed as their right-back Gaz Smith dribbled into the opposition half and called out Ciaran Carroll’s name before producing a pinpoint cross for the striker to head to the Kippure net.

Kermode then continued his hot scoring streak when stepping in off the left wing and shooting to the top corner for 3-0.

Goal four was a great individual effort by substitute Ross Reid. The tricky winger had only just come on and his first touch saw him advance into the Kippure box before firing in off the post.

In the end it could have been even more comfortable for Newfoundwell as late substitute Conor Tuite - part of the Irish soccer team at this year’s Rio Paralympics - had two goals disallowed for offside.

Attention will now switch back to the league where the ‘Well - currently second in the table - take on neighbours Boyne Harps at United Park this Thursday night. •Newfoundwell’s second string have gone top of the Premier Reserve League after Jordan Duffy fired them to a 1-0 away win over Trim Celtic on Saturday afternoon.
