Dunleer double up on Masters podium

DUNLEER AC’s Karen Costello continued her winning ways with another county title on Sunday last, running 11:22 for 3km in the Louth Masters Cross-County Championsh­ip in Togher.

Costello was joined on the podium by clubmate Nicola Welsh who showed no sign of an end to her good run when claiming a well-deserved third place in 11:43.

Sandra Doheny claimed the Over-45 section title, and these three together with Jacqueline Matthews were silver medallists in the team event, just three points behind Drogheda & District.

In the men’s race both Ray Hughes and Garrett Murray had good runs, with both finishing in fourth place in their respective age groups Over-45).

Meanwhile, at the Jingle Bells 5k on Saturday in the Phoenix Park, Pat Fitzpatric­k and Anthony Connolly were both delighted to run the 5km in sub 17 minutes, while Helen Cheshire crossed the line in a sub 23-minute time.

Next weekend the action turns to the National Cross-Country Championsh­ips and Dunleer AC will have athletes running in the Under 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 races as well as in the Novice section. The event takes place at DkIT in Dundalk and all support will be welcome.
