€50k boost for cancer centre

ENDA COLLINS CYCLE PROVES SUCCESS

- By HUBERT MURPHY

A CHARITY cycle event, organised in memory of local man Enda Collins, yielded a cheque for €50,000 for the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre, handed over to the organisation last weekend.

The staggering amount was raised by family and friends as part of a Drogheda to Galway cycle last year.

Enda had actually organised much of the event, but sadly passed away before it was staged.

But it went ahead as he wished and former Leeds and Ireland star Gary Kelly also took part.

The event raised €25,000 and another €25,000 came from the Tony Curran memorial fund, with the support of Catherine, Shaun and Eoghan Curran.

The organisers would like to thank everyone who played a part in the cycle, from those that took part, to the Gary Kelly Centre itself and Musgraves and SuperValu who supported them during their stops across the country.

Another event is being planned for this August, this time in association with the Drogheda and District AC who were also very much a part of Enda’s life.

Declan Weldon from the Gary Kelly Centre said he was overjoyed with the kind donation.

Enda made use of the service and found it highly beneficial during his illness. The cycle was to be his way of saying thanks.

‘ To raise €50,000 in one swoop is tremendous and helps our service enormously,’ Declan stated.

‘We value every penny that comes in the door and we’d just like to take this chance to thank everyone who supports our centre here.

‘We know it means a lot to people and that’s important.’
