Talented youngsters do themselves and club proud

THE younger Cushinstow­n athletes did themselves and the club proud last Wednesday at Claremont Stadium in Navan at the Meath Championsh­ips for the Under-9 to Under-11 age group.

There were some great throws, with Aoife Cassidy claiming the gold medal in the Girls U-9 Turbo javelin and Harry Gough winning the boys equivalent. Barry Lenehan took gold in the Boys U-10 turbo javelin and Roisin Quinn came third in the girls event in the same age group.

In the Girls U-9 long jump Yasmin Yilmaz came third.

Nia Hederton, Emel Yilmaz, Luke McAlleese, Eva Gallagher, Chloe Lin Nolan, Andrew Gough, Kevin Doyle, Kevin O’Connor, Mia Hegeney, Ivan Keogh, Dylan Redmond, Megan O’Connor, Katelin May Nolan, Kyle Hederton and Sean Armstrong all performed brilliantl­y in the sprints, 500m, 600m, long jump and turbo javelin.

In torrential rain on Saturday in Morton Stadium, the All Ireland Combined Events took place.

The weather played havoc with the timetable and the high jump discipline had to be cancelled.

However, Amy Callaghan (U-14) did brilliantl­y in the remaining four events - shot putt, 75m hurdles, 800m and long jump - to claim the bronze medal.

Some of Cushinstow­n’s older athletes were also competing on Saturday in Morton Stadium, representi­ng their universiti­es in the Irish Universiti­es Athletics Associatio­n competitio­n. Shane Joyce and Elizabeth Morland represente­d DCU and both won gold in their javelin competitio­ns.

On Sunday at the AAI Open Games in Santry, Michael O’Sullivan came fifth in the Senior Men’s discus, Jack O’Connor came fourth in the Senior Men’s long jump and Shane Joyce was third in the Senior Men’s javelin.
