First sitting in Drogheda’s new courthouse this week
COURT will sit for the first time in the new Drogheda courthouse this Friday, July 7th it has been revealed.
The impressive new courthouse is situated beside Drogheda Garda Station and was constructed as part of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) bundle of seven courthouses in various locations nationwide.
The new facility is a two courtroom venue which will facilitate both Circuit and District Court business.
The first, smaller courtroom is situated downstairs while a second larger room which can accommodate Jury hearings is located upstairs.
the new building also includes three holding cells, a vulnerable family room, a number of consulting rooms, a suite for legal practitioners and judges chambers.
The building also features office accommodation for judges and court staff.
IN addition, there is also a room which can be used in future for those giving video evidence directly to either of the courtrooms and may even be used to give video evidence abroad
Construction on the multi million euro project began in November 2015 after the contract was awarded to BAM construction.
The tenders were assessed as part of a public private partnership exercise and a selection was made National Development Finance Agency (NDFA).
The tender has been awarded to BAM construction as part of a bundle including projects in Limerick, Letterkenny and Wexford.
The facility will be managed by BAM for 25 years after which it will revert back to the government. Work on the new facility began in November 2015 on the site at Murdock’s Carpark beside Drogheda garda station.
The new facility will be officially opened on Monday, July 10th by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD alongside Chief Justice Susan Denham.
