‘New’ Lidl opens on the Donore Road on Thursday

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

THURSDAY morning will see another chapter in Drogheda’s retail sector take flight with the official opening of the new Lidl supermarket on the Donore Road.

Closed since January, the old store, which opened in 2006, was flattened and replaced with a two-storey outlet and it opens for business on Thursday at 8am, with Mayor Pio Smith cutting the ribbon.

The store will be in the top two in Ireland in terms of size and a second, similiar store is being planned at the exisiting site of Lidl’s other store in the M1 Retail Park.

The Drogheda Independent got a sneak preview of the premises last week.

It will feature all the usual items - only on a grander scale. The upstairs area is for staff use, so all shopping will be on the ground floor.

Rory Callaghan and the Nature’s Best team were the first on site last week as they checked out their new stocking area. Employing 300 staff, the company have been five years with Lidl, supplying the likes of salads and coleslaw.

There are a number of additions with the new store - including a customer toilet.

Sustainable features include Solar & wind powered car park lighting that are 100% renewable plus free electric vehicle charging stations for customers as well as a recovery heating and ventilation system. The car park has 181 spaces.

The company will also be handing over a cheque to the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre as part of their community initiative.
