Fr Michael Seery’s first mass in Lourdes

-

A young Drogheda priest, who was ordained in St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, on Sunday, celebrated his first Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church on Monday evening.

He is Rev. Michael Seery, son of Mr. James and Mrs. Ria Seery, Bothar Brugha, and he was one of twenty-one students raised to the priesthood by the Archbishop of Dublin, Most Rev. Dr. McQuaid.

Following the ceremony, the newly-ordained priests left for their native parishes. Father Seery, accompanied by his mother and father, sisters, Catherine, Anne and Bredeen; and brother, Billy, arrived in Drogheda at about 5.30 p.m. The streets at Bothar Brugha were gaily decorated with bunting and flags, and huge banners read : “Welcome to Our Priest’.

At the Mass on Monday evening there was a packed congregation. Father Seery was assisted by Rev. Matthew Walsh, C.C., St. Peter’s, while Paddy Coyle, a deacon, who is a next door neighbour of Fr. Seery’s in Bothar Brugha, assisted with the distribution of Holy Communion. He will be ordained next year.

Father Seery was educated al St. Mary’s School, and later at the Christian Brothers’ School in Drogheda.

Fr. Seery is very well known in local sporting circles, as he is a more than useful tennis player and footballer. Last year, he was captain of the Lourdes tennis club and he also played junior football for the Newtown Blues’ club.

On Tuesday night, Fr. Seery was feted by the Blues.
