Rogers makes his mark with superb run to take silver medal

-

THE National under 23 Track and Field Championships took place in Tullamore, on Saturday.

St Peter’s AC athlete Mark Rogers put in a fantastically brave performance in the 400m hurdles final to finish second.

Mark tore down the home straight neck and neck in what turned out to be a two horse race, only to lose out by the narrowest of margins.

Mark finished in a time of 56.5 seconds to earn a much deserved silver medal.

The same venue hosted the national Masters championships on Sunday and the evergreen Tom McGrane was as ever present to fly for the Saint Peter’s club.

Tom was again on the podium when he won bronze in the over fifty shot putt with a throw of 9.88m.

Tom also took part in the discus were he had a decent performance with a throw of 23.6m to finish 8th.

He also competed in the hammer were he had a below par throw of 16.95m to finish fourth, however nothing could overshadow Tom’s satisfaction at collecting a national medal.

This year’s season just seems to get better and better for Gabriel Bell who this week got his just rewards for his recent top class long jump performances when he was selected for the Irish Schools team.

The team will go into battle on Saturday 15th July in the Schools international which will take place at Morton Stadium Santry.

This week club athletes who have qualified for the national juvenile championships will put the final touches to their preparations aided by their club mates.

St Peter’s will this year host a 5K road race around the scenic roads of Dromiskin village in an event co-hosted with Saint Josephs GAA club. T

his is the first time both clubs have worked together on an event like this under the motto: ‘Working together in Sport’. Runners can enter online by going onto the club website stpetersac.com and following the link.
