Parking woes not going to go away

-

THE parking situation around Crosslanes, Boyle O’Reilly and the hospital in general is not getting any better and the need for a real solution is now paramount.

The situation has even spread to the road into the Whitethorn estate.

I got a letter from a concerned resident who says cars are being parked on the footpath, either by local workers or commuters.

They feel walkers on the path are now vulnerable to approaching traffic, especially chilldren.

‘ This morning when I was going to work, I noticed cars cannot pass each other at the entrance of the estate because one side is blocked by these parked cars. This is when the signal is red at the Crosslanes traffic lights and awaiting their turn to pull out from the estate.’

They add what if an emergency vehicle was in this situation?

There is an ongoing issue with cars parking on the footpath at the side of the road, opposite St Peter’s cemetery.

I came across it last week and at times there was barely room for pedestrians to pass by, never mind a buggy, wheelchair or a person needing assistance.

Out on the main road, there’s issues with cars parking on the footpath opposite the garage, impacting on line of sight for those trying to exit their homes.

The matter was brought up at council level some time ago, but I’ve heard nothing since.

There is a huge HSE car park at Crosslanes and that is the obvious answer to this problem.

The issue is the price. Seeing that the council and the HSE are both government bodies, can some kind of an agreement not be sorted out.

What about a weekly ticket at a certain price or concessions on parking at certain times of the day to take the cars off the footpaths.

Maybe the new mayor would organise a meeting with the HSE on it - see are there peak levels for the car park - and trash out some kind of solution for the sake of everyone concerned.

This is a way to sort out a problem and a few heads working together for the good of the community would be good.
