Cushinstow­n hammer home message

CUSHINSTOW­N had double reason to celebrate at the weekend as Zoe Mohan and Amy Callaghan both produced gold medal-winning performanc­es on day three of the National Juvenile Track and Field Championsh­ips in Tullamore.

Zoe won the Under-18 Women’s hammer with a personal best throw of 47.30m, while Amy also improved her best with a fantastic throw of 12.20m to take first place in the Under-14 shot putt.

Aoife Lenehan competed in the Under-17 javelin and Katie Lenehan in the Under-15 javelin, with the two sisters each finishing seventh in their events.

On Saturday there were many other superb performanc­es by Cushinstow­n athletes at the National B Championsh­ips, led by Aine O’Sullivan who claimed gold in the Girls Under-15 shot putt with a new PB of 10.25m and was placed second in the high jump.

Lee Callaghan won silver in the Boys Under-12 shot putt and did very well in his high jump competitio­n,

Armelle Gallagher (Girls U-16) was fourth in her long jump competitio­n and ran very well in her 800m and Abi Sheehy won a bronze medal in her 80m sprint and performed well in her long jump competitio­n.

Meanwhile, another club member, Elizabeth Morland, will be competing this week for the Irish team at the European Juniors in Italy where she will be taking part in the 100m hurdles and heptathlon, while Paul Keogan was selected to compete for the Ireland team at the 2017 Para Athletics World Championsh­ips.

Closer to home, Cushinstow­n club members took part in the annual fund-raising event on Saturday which this year comprised a six-hour relay.
