HARVEST TIME

Motorists are being advised to be extra vigilant and to slow down and drive with extreme caution, particularly on the smaller rural roads at this time of the year. The harvesting of crops such as potatoes, wheat, barley, etc. is now taking place across the country and as a result there is a much larger volume of agricultural machinery travelling along the roads. The heavy growth of vegetation and hedgerows throughout this summer has also made the country roads that little bit more dangerous; the roads appear narrower and it is impossible to see beyond a few metres, so try to avoid excessive speeds and/or overtaking on approach to twists, turns and bends in the road; for if you happen to encounter such a large agricultural vehicle around the next bend and, chances are that you will, the motorist in the smaller car is enivitably going to come off much worse than the larger machine.

So be aware, slow down and proceed with extreme care. Speaking of the heavy vegetation of summer, have you noticed the large quantity of the wild herb called Meadowsweet that can be seen along all country roads at the moment. This herb grows along the sides of the road in front of the hedgerows. It stands about one metre tall and has a yellowish/whitish flower at its head which, when squeezed or rolled between thum and forefinger presents a beautiful clinical scent. The Meadowsweet appears from mid June till November and is particularly heavy in growth this year.

FARMERS’ MARKET

A weekly farmers’ market is continuing every Sunday from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. at Sonairte at the Ninch Laytown. Fresh fruit, veg, produce, crafts etc. etc. amid the wonderful setting along the banks of the Nanny Water.

HERBERTSTOWN.

The townland of Herbertstown is one of 18 townlands that make up the old parish of Stamullen; it contains over 500 acres of land and there are a number of prehistoric archaeological sites and monuments dotted around the landscape here including Neolithic Tombs, Bronze Age Barrows, Iron Age Ringforts, Early Christian Souterrains and Medieval church and settlement sites.

The townland is referred to locally as ‘Harbourstown’ and there are people who still refer to this name as being the true origins of the name and that the name ‘Herbertstown’ is not in fact the correct name of the townland. Some people in the past went as far as to suggest and to ‘swearby’ that the name Harbourstown came about from the ‘fact’ that the post for the old Harbourstown House used to come into Balbriggan and from that town it was then brought to the Caddell family home at Herbertstown and so, as a result, the townland got the name of ‘Harbourstown’. However; the true origins of the name Herbertstown is first mentioned as a place-name here in the later 14th century and can be seen in the Llanthony Cartularies (Monastic Records) of the Augustinian Foundation of Llanthony Prima and Secunda, who were established at Colpe and Duleek in the later 12th century.

The name of Herbertstown may also be seen in the Preston family records dating to the year 1408. The name Herberd is a family or personal name and from the coming of that name into Ireland with the Norman Invasion the place became known as the Town or homestead of Herberd, which in turn became Herberd’s Town, then finally to that of Herbertstown.A few years ago I tried explaining the origins of the name to an older resident of these parts; however they were having none of it and insisted that the true name is and always was that of Harbourstown and it was all due to the post for Harbourstown House having originally been brought from the port at Balbriggan. Fancy, as it may appear, but the Caddell Family, who were resident on the Meath side of the Delvin River at the Naul since the medieval period, did not build their residence at Herbertstown till the later 17th century, with the great Harbourstown House having been constructed in the 18th century and which was finally demolished in the mid 1940s. The local variation of the corrupted name became that of Harbourstown over time and which is still referred to by this name today.
