Exciting doubles action in the Greenhills league

-

FIVE points now separate the top four pairings in the Greenhills Summer League Doubles following some great matches in front of a good attendance last Thursday night.

First up, Eugene Mc Kenna and Claire Woods clashed with Josephine Moran and Anna Farrell, and after a poor start by the latter pair Eugene and Claire stormed five up after four ends.

Anna and Josephine attacked the head in the fifth end, closing the gap down to three, but Eugene and Claire responded to restore their advantage of five, with just the final end to play.

Anna and Josephine gave it their best shot but never looked like bridging the gap and Eugene and Claire took the spoils in impressive fashion by five shots.

In the second match Jimmy Flood and Gertie Griffin were probably the favourites against Aileen Fitzgerald and Peter Woods and took the first two ends on the bounce, going four up.

Aileen and Peter, however, responded in impressive style and not only clawed back to the deficit but edged three shots ahead to leave the opposition pair rattled.

Jimmy and Gertie were not going to throw in the towel, though, and in the last two ends they put their opponents under a period of sustained pressure and two superb forehand draw shots to the jack from Jimmy helped snatch victory at the death by one shot - but credit to their opponents who played an excellent game against the favourites.

In the final match of the night - Tom Devin and Jack Howell against Jackie Maher and Tony Lacken - and after losing the first end Jackie and Tony responded in impressive fashion to go three up after four.

Tom and Jack turned things around in the fifth end, getting a wick of another bowl in the head to cut down the deficit to one with two ends to play, and then in the deciding end Jack showed fantastic composure as he helped his team win by the narrowest of margins.

The stand-out performers on the night were Jack Howell, Jimmy Flood, Eugene Mc Kenna and Aileen Fitzgerald.

Members travelling to the Redeemer club should note that the pick-up points are Patrick Street at 7.30 pm and Monsterboice at 7.40 pm.

Times of play for Juveniles are Thursday from 7 to 8 pm and seniors from 8 to 10.30pm.
