MANNAN CASTLE

CAPTAIN Thomas Gartlan enjoyed his Captain’s Prize weekend and hopes that everyone who played also had an enjoyable time.

Philip McGovern was the overall winner and as he entertained the crowd with his speech he looked happiest as he donned the cap that only he can wear ‘Winner – Captain’s Prize 2017’!

Standing with one hand raised aloft, retired Garda Philip began his speech by pledging to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth and he jokingly informed the members and guests that as his wife had no interest in golf, he would be accepting applications to join him on his prize of a two-night stay in the Heritage Killenard Golf Resort.

With some choice pins and choice words from members to describe said pins, it made for a challenging weekend, with the Irish summer making its presence felt too. However, one thing that was agreed was the fabulous condition of the course and many members paid tribute to Brian Barnes and his team of green keepers.

Thomas Donnelly was the most consistent golfer who scored well on both days to win second prize. As Thomas only took up the game last year, he is a great example of someone who has welcomed the positive influence of golf in life and has become a popular member around the club.

Equally impressive was Patrick Byrne who is another guy who only took the game up recently and like Thomas breezed into the play-off in their first Captain’s Prize. In the playoff, we had a true mix of golfers, with five single-digit handicappers amongst the top 12.

As usual it was great to see so many members at the playoff and the sense of community around the club was evident as members took up various roles, from caddying for the players to marking cards and giving support.

A big thanks to Val Donohue, with help from his wife Eileen who ran a book on the weekend. Funds raised will go to the Clubhouse Improvement Fund. I believe the odds were good on Philip McGovern - I hope he backed himself!

Captain Thomas used the weekend to unveil a seat in memory of his parents, which now sits on the tee box of our signature third hole. During his speech Captain Thomas thanked everyone who helped him throughout the year so far, including team captains, committee, staff and his family. Captain Thomas was also delighted to announce that the club would be hosting a family fun day on August 26th. With lots of golf and non-golf fun activities for all the family, it promises to be a great day and Captain Thomas was also pleased to announce that there will be special membership offers available on the day.

Prior to the presentation of the Captain’s prizes, the occasion was used to present the Capaldi Cup to this year’s winner Nigel O’Neill. After the presentation of prizes, it was great to see so many members stay and enjoy a bit of music, thanks to the talented Patrick Carolan who entertained us, and we also enjoyed the impromptu songs from the also very talented John McGinnity.

Derek Murnaghan was surprised by a birthday party thrown for him by some friends. Not many can say that they had all of Mannan Castle sing Happy Birthday to them!

The clubhouse was abuzz, with music, tasty food and a few beverages. The craic was mighty, and thanks to all those designated drivers!
