Woods in the driving seat
GREENHILLS stalwart Peter Woods took another big step towards securing his first Summer League round robin title, forging six shots clear of the field last Thursday night with one round remaining.
Peter teamed up with Claire Woods in the final match of the night against Eugene McKenna and Marie Maher.
In a tight contest, a perfectly weighted bowl to the head by Claire inspired the Woods and
WATER RESULT FOR EMILY they surged into a five-shot lead soon after.
Eugene and Marie battled on and cut the gap to three, but it was too little too late as Peter and Claire took a fine victory.
Earlier, in the first match of the night, Jimmy Flood and John Hurley took on Jackie Maher and Josephine Moran in another keenly contested affair.
Both sides enjoyed purple patches with Jackie and Josephine coming from three down to establish a two-shot lead. The lead swung back to Jimmy and John and they held on to secure the win and nail-biting finish.
Gertie Griffin and Anna Farrell stormed into a four-shot lead against Jack Howell and Aileen Fitzgerald, but were unable to sustain their early momentum.
Jack and Aileen didn’t panic and slowly reeled their opponents back in before charging ahead themselves.
However, Gertie and Anna weren’t finished and showed all their experience to regain control and run out comfortable winners in the end.
Gertie was among the star performers on the night with Peter Woods, Jackie Maher and John Hurley also catching the eye.
There is one week left in the competition so any competitors who are unable to attend are asked to let the committee know in advance to allow for the smooth running of the tournament. The draw will take place at 8.30 pm sharp.
There are two weeks left in the Redeemer league and the pick-up points are Patrick Street at 7.30pm and Monsterboice at 7.40.
Play continues on Thursday nights for Greenhills juniors from 7 to 8pm and seniors from 8 to 10.30pm.
