John Boyle O’Reilly commenced his Journalist­ic career in the Drogheda Argus and at the age of 22 was convicted of treason and transporte­d in chains as a Fenian prisoner, to the Penal Colony at Fremantle in Western Australia. Two years later in 1869 his dramatic escape to America on the whaler “Gazelle” has entered Irish Folklore and history.

He continued in Journalism with the Boston Pilot rising to become its editor. In 1876, he along with others organised the daring and successful escape of 6 Fenian prisoners from Fremantle Jail on board the American whaler “Catalpa”. This gave a huge lift to the Irish people at home and abroad.

He campaigned ceaselessl­y in America for Irish Freedom. He also championed civil rights for all and was much loved by the American people. He is rightly remembered with pride in Memorials at his native Dowth, Boston and Perth in Western Australia. Property Details
