What is happening about the Fleadh - and cleaning the town up

-

Dear Sir,

I wish to remind CEO of Louth County Council, Joan Martin, that there are only 9 months left to go before Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann takes place in Drogheda and there is a glaring lack of visible progress in the town!

Currently no Event Manager has been appointed and no public information office has been opened – and there’s not even a phone number that the public can ring for answers to queries. And just 36/37 weeks to go!

I would suggest that a central information point be established in the Tourist Office in the centre of town. Also, a suggestion box be made available where the public can post comments or suggestions relating to the Fleadh, that can be discussed or taken on board by the organising committee.

The town needs a major facelift and an action plan to carry out these works. As yet there is no overall plan for town enhancement on display. This is very worrying as West Street and Narrow West Street need a facelift, as do other parts of the town. The people need to know what’s going on and I suggest that the Louth CEO and Fleadh Director, Joan Martin, issues a monthly progress report on town enhancement works.

I have attended the Fleadh on many occasions over the years, including Cavan, Derry and Sligo, where the towns looked their best. In fact, I have been lobbying Comhaltas CEO Labhrás Ó Murchú for over 20 years to bring it to Drogheda. At last we have it – let’s be prepared and ready for it and get working on the town’s appearance right away!
