NEWTOWN UNITED CHAMPIONS

There were jubilant scenes in the away dressing room at Torro United on Saturday as Newtown United’s U14 team secured the 2017 NECSL league title in fine style.

Going into the game knowing that a win would secure the title it was understandable that Newtown would start the game a bit cautious but just before the break a goal dispatched to the Torro net by Jonathan Ogungbe settled the nerves and after the half time team talk by manager Paul Flood and assist and manager Mark Dardis it was a different Newtown team that appeared for the second half. With Josh Flanagan and Seamus Doherty pulling the strings it wasn’t long before Jonathan Ogungbe bagged his second goal of the game and shortly afterwards goals from Jamie Durnin and Andy Monaghan made sure that all the hardwork throughout the year paid off as Newtown were crowned Division 1 Champions.

Manager Paul Flood and assistant manager Mark Dardis deserve an enormous amount of credit in this title win. Paul is no stranger to working with underage teams running indoor soccer events in Drumcondrath community centre on a Friday night for all local school children and has been doing so for the past 10 years.

Having joined Newtown utd three years ago he will be delighted with the success. Assistant manager Mark Dardis has spent most of his playing career with Newtown utd so this title win will be especially pleasing for him. On the way to the Division 1 title Newtown United have played 14 games, winning 12, drawing 1 and only losing 1, scoring 84 goals on the way. Top scorer was Jonathan Ogungbe with 33 goals.

The team consist of players from Lobinstown, Castletown, Drumconrath/Meathill, Nobber and it was their great commitment and determination that carried them across the line by 1pt from their nearest challengers Virginia. 1pt, not a lot but enough to be crowned champions. Team: Myles Aver, Seamus Doherty, Dara Dillon, Conor Price, Josh Flanagan, Jamie Durnin, Donal O Hare, Ryan Moore, Aaron Hickey, Mark Gilsenan, Josh Meade, Andy Monaghan, Micheal Rooney, Alex Clarke, James Mc Kenna, Jonathan Ogungbe, Janeks Dursis, Ciaran Mc Connon, Mark Gosling.
