West Street will light up!

- By HUBERT MURPHY

WEST Street will be lighting up for Christmas after agreement was reached between Louth CC and representatives of the lights committee.

The agreement ‘gives a significant degree of certainty for the future of this scheme and will ensure Drogheda and West Street has Christmas lights this year and into the future,’ a statement revealed.

‘As many may be aware, LCC have over the years covered the cost of our electricity, sourced and installed a Christmas Tree for St. Peters Plaza and in turn also provided additional financial support. This has in the past kept this scheme going and ensured we had lights in place each year to this year.’

However, the lights needed updating and the finance wasn’t there for it.

‘In the immediate short term LCC have agreed to further add to the financial contribution we already receive from them and this is a fantastic boost.

‘ I am particularly grateful to all who have shown an interest and who have offered their help. In particular I wish to acknowledge and thank our Chief Executive Joan Martin and Director of Services Frank Pentony who have offered the suite of help that will help us to progress this scheme,’ the statement added.

However, an appeal has gone out for more volunteers to help with the lights each year as there are costs involved in hanging them, up to €11,000 each year.

‘We need to have more individuals willing to canvass those who will not contribute to this scheme to ensure we can keep our side of the bargain. We presently have too few people assisting this scheme,’ the statement remarked.

Independent Councillor Kevin callan extended his thanks and congratulations to both the Council and the Committee for ensuring the town has functioning lights again this year.
