Reinstate plastic collection at brink bank

-

A local councillor has started a petition calling on Louth County Council (LCC) to reinstate the collection of plastics at bring centres across County Louth.

The decision by the council to cease collection of plastics at bring centres across Louth last July was heavily criticised at the time by both the public and local representatives. Councillor Joanna Byrne brought an emergency motion to the monthly meeting at the time asking that the council reverse their decision to cease collecting plastics from the bring banks and this was unanimously supported by the members.

Ms Byrne said that following the passing of the motion, Chief Executive Joan Martin said she had listened to the members and took on board their points but as of now she was not prepared to reverse the decision.

‘Since then there has has been public outrage at the axing of this vital service and an increase in illegal dumping,’ said Ms Byrne.

She has launched an online petition to highlight the want and the need to reinstate this service for the people of the county.

‘We are told to recycle, we are encouraged to recycle and now Louth County Council place obstacles in the way of recycling plastic. We are told that it costs €136,000 per annum for this service and people should recycle ‘responsibly’. Surely that’s what people are trying to do by bringing their plastics to the bring banks. Now is the time to stand up and let your voice be heard,’ she said.
