Super Saints retain crown

ARDEE St. Mary’s saw off the combination side of Kilkerley/ Naomh Malachi at Darver on Monday to secure The Argus U-16 division 1 league title for the second year in a row.

The Mary’s were reduced to 14 men early in the game after the dismissal of Jonathan Commins,

However, the Mary’s dug deep to grind out a result and reaffirm their status as League winners.

At half time the Mary’s were behind by one point 0-4 to 1-2, The second half saw the combination side rally and enjoy a five point lead with only ten minutes remaining on the clock.

At the stage the Mary’s needed players to step up and show some leadership and they did just that. Andrew Rogers and Nathan Buckley worked tirelessly at the back, Jay Crawley, Darragh McCoy along with substitute Eoin Clarke tore the Kilkerley/Malachi side open with powerful runs through the middle a goal and a point from Tiernan Corrigan along with a point from Carl Gillespie closed the gap to leave the two teams tied.

With the clock ticking down DJ McKeever and Paraic McKenny sprung into action determined not to let a breeze pass them and keeper Evan Courtney pulled off an heroic save.

Apoint from the Mary’s Captain James Mc Gillick saw the Mary’s take the lead for the first time in the match, as the full time whistle sounded the Mary’s celebrated with a full time score St. Mary’s 1-8, Kilkerley/ Malachi1-7

The Kilkerley/ Malachi sides passage from the semi final to the final also saw their opposition St. Fechins reduced to 14 men.

However these Mary’s boys showed why they are a force to be reckoned with and their never-say-die attitude saw them overcome a strong Kilkerley/ Malachi side even with fourteen men.

The Mary’s felt they had a point to prove after their bitter defeat at the hands of St. Fechins in the championship final earlier in the month and they certainly did that as they etched their name on the division 1 league cup
