Boyne youngsters perform well in cross country event

-

THE Leinster even ages and novice cross country took place on Saturday last in Navan Adventure centre, with the close proximity ensuring a strong turnout from local club Boyne A.C.

An ideal venue for cross country racing, with a testing course for the athletes, there was a great attendance from clubs and counties from all over Leinster, ensuring some very competitive action.

An u10s non - championship race got the day off to a start, with a fantastic win from Sholah Lawrence in the irls race, who eased her way through the pack and finished with a sprint, and Kate Culhane running a super tactical race to finish just behind in 2nd, testament to all the hard work that these two young ladies have been doing in recent months.

In the boys race, a hugely competitive field saw a strong finish from Lorcan Forde Dunne in 6th, and Alex Robertson, hot on his heels in 7th, and clubmates Tadgh Forde Dunne, Luca McLoughlin, Rhys Clarke and Fergus Nolan all running well.

The championships then began with the u12 girls where Ella McLoughlin the sole representative from Boyne, ran a great race over the 2,000m distance to finish 51st from a field of 151. In the boys race, Shea O’Donnell, running out of age finished in a super 5th place overall, with Caelan Quinn finishing 10th in yet another big field of 124 runners.

Both now qualify to represent Leinster in the upcoming National Cross Country Championships. The girls u14 had a tough 3,000m to contend with in a field of 114 athletes, and some strong performances from the Boyne A.C. girls led to a 4th place club result, with Lily Cummins having a fantastic run finishing in 16th overall, followed by Eabha Cosgrove in 24th, Anna Faulkner in 25th, Maedbh Nolan in 27th and Saran Meite in 64th.

Neil Culhane finished 8th out of age in the boys u14 race, with clubmate Danny Nugent finishing in a fine 11th overall, and both finishing 1st and 2nd for Louth respectively. The u16 boys ran 4,000m, where Tom Cummins, finishing 33rd and Christian Quinn finishing 44th both ran great races.

Eva Cummins finished in a superb 2nd place in the u18 ladies, while in the novice womens race, Sally Clarke ran well to finish 30th in a field of 92 competitors. The National Competition takes place on November 26th in Abbotstown.
