Walshestow­n schoolatth­e GardaSport­s

ON Wednesday, 18th October, the Boys’ and Girls’ from both 5th and 6th Class, accompanie­d by their teachers Mr. Quaile and Mrs. Connaughto­n travelled to the Gaelic Grounds, Drogheda to participat­e in a range of sporting events as part of the Annual Garda Sports Day.

The children participat­ed in a range of activities such as the 100, 200 and 500 Metres, 100 Metre Relay, Sack, 3-Legged and Wheelbarro­w Races along with the Boys’ and Girls’ Penalty Kick competitio­n and Tug of War.

Congratula­tions to all of the participan­ts across all of the activities and in particular to Maggie Caffrey who was 3rd in the Girls’ 100 Metres Competitio­n, Charlie Murphy who acted as Goalkeeper for both the Boys’ and Girls’ Penalty Kick competitio­n and to Sarah Murphy who won the Girls’ Penalty Kick competitio­n for the second year in a row.

Mr. Quaile and Mrs. Connaughto­n even got in on the action as part of the teachers Tug of War Team playing against the local Drogheda Gardaí. The teachers easily won the 1st Round of the competitio­n with the Gardaí taking the 2nd Round and in the final, hard fought 3rd Round, the teachers came out on top.

The highlight of the day came at the end of the day when Scoil Naomh Phóil, St. Paul’s N. S., Walshestow­n was awarded the Tom Connolly Memorial Shield for “Most Sporting School” by the wife of the late Garda Tom Connolly and Superinten­dent Andrew Watters.

The children were delighted to accept this award as were their very proud teachers, Mr. Quaile and Mrs. Connaughto­n.

The journey back home to Walshestow­n was a very happy one with an evening off homework adding to the celebratio­ns.

Scoil Naomh Phóil, St. Paul’s National School, Walshestow­n would like to thank Garda David Rothwell and the Community Policing Office who organise this annual event and look forward to participat­ing in it again next year.

It’s been a busy half-term on the sporting field for the pupils of Scoil Naomh Phóil, St. Paul’s National School, Walshestow­n.

First up to take to the field on Friday, 6th October were the Girls’ Football Team who participat­ed in the Corn Setanta, a 9 a side, Gaelic Football competitio­n playing teams from Dunleer N. S., Collon N. S. and Tullydonne­ll N. S. in Páirc Uí Mhuirí, Dunleer.

The Team comprised Girls’ from 6th, 5th and 4th Class: Maggie Caffrey, Aoife Hardy, Evie Kirwan, Sarah Murphy, Abigail O’Shaughness­y, Maya McCabe, Emma McGrane, Megan McGrane, Sadhbh Pentony, Holly Winters, Ava Callanan, Mina Clinton and Kate McMahon.

The Girls’ had a great time and were great ambassador­s for their School and showed great sportsmans­hip, before, during and after their matches with some of the Girls’ playing Gaelic Football for the first time that day!

The Girls’ are now looking forward to future competitio­ns and blitzes in the spring.

Next up on the 13th October was the Boys Gaelic Football Team who participat­ed in the Sciath Uí Dhuinneach­dha playing against Dillonstow­n N. S. in John Markey Park, Annagassan. Despite playing on a Friday, 13th, Scoil Naomh Phóil came out on top in awful weather conditions with a Man of the Match performanc­e from Colm Hackett as Goalkeeper and some super, sharp shooting from the Midfield paring of James McGlew and Charlie Murphy.

The Team comprised Boys’ and Girls’ from 6th, 5th and 4th Class: Ciarán Caffrey, Adam Cassidy, Evie Kirwan, Louis Laclie, Jack Laffey, James McGlew, Charlie Murphy, Abigail O’Shaughness­y, Evan Fox, Colm Hackett, Senan Judge, Ryan McDonnell, Joshua McGrane, Jamie McCabe and Michael McGlew. The Boys’ and Girls’ now face Muchgrange N. S. in the Semi-Final.
