THE cream of Drogheda’s musical talent was on show for an outstanding concert at the Holy Family Church in Ballsgrove.
The all-star event in aid of the Drogheda Alzheimer branch’s building fund attracted a large crowd to the beautiful church, courtesy of Parish priest Fr David Bradley.
The show marked the first time two top local singers, Eugene Ginty and Amie Dyer, had duetted together.
And it was a pairing which clicked instantly with such classics as Pie Jesu, Nella Fantasia and Time to Say Goodbye wowing the audience.
The brilliance of tenor Eugene and soprano Amie had the appreciative crowd enraptured and they received several standing ovations.
Their individual singing also featured such highlights as Summertime, Somewhere and Rule the World from Amie with Eugene excelling in such numbers as The Impossible Dream, Nessun Dorma and Goodbye.
The night got under way with the Holy Family Youth Choir, under musical directors, Amie Dyer (showing her versatility) and Ciara Brannigan, shining with a selection of popular numbers.
The depth of the town’s musical talent was evident from the wonderfully varied playing of both the Lourdes senior and junior brass bands.
Musical directors, Professor Michael Alcorn from Queen’s University, Belfast (senior band) and John Walsh ( junior band) got the maximum from their charges who played a variety of popular, traditional and essentially brass music. In a guest appearance, local harmonica player, John Farrell, had the audience clapping and toe-tapping with a terrific medley.
Mayor, Pio Smith, commended all the artists for their ‘superb talent’ and said they were a credit to the town in showcasing Drogheda at its musical best.
Chairman of the Alzheimer branch, Noel Heeney, thanked Fr Bradley and all the artists in helping them to raise funds to provide a new daycare centre.
