Costello leads Wee County charge in cross-country

DUNLEER club athlete Karen Costello was once again to the fore on Sunday as she helped the Louth team finish third in the Senior Ladies 5k at the Leinster Senior & Juvenile Cross-Country Championsh­ips in Adamstown, Wexford.

Costello placed fifth individual­ly and shd was well supported by clubmate Nicola Welsh, together with Drogheda & District trio Mary Leech, Yasmin Canning and Erin Mc Hugh as well as Sally Clarke from Boyne AC.

In the juvenile championsh­ips, Eseosa Victor and James Russell claimed individual medals with seventh and 12th place finishes in the Under-15 event, and with teammates Patrick Farrell and Edward Mc Entee they claimed bronze in the team section.

The Boys Under-17s were led home by Kian Leavy and Danny O’Brien in 13th and 14th, and with Peter Meegan, Conor Matthews, Cathal Butler and Fran Mc Donnell they claimed third club.

Matthew Mc Entee helped the Louth team to medals in the Under-13 age group and Conor Brennan finished second in the non-championsh­ip Under-9 event.

Next stop will be the National Championsh­ips, with the even ages in Abbottstow­n in a fortnight’s time and the uneven ages in Waterford two weeks later.

Meanwhile, recent Louth Senior Cross-Country runner-up Costello has been selected to run for Ireland at the British & Irish Masters Cross-Country in Derry this weekend on the back of her fourth-place finish at the Autumn Open in Abbottstow­n.
