Marathon man bitten by Big Apple bug
DULEEK & District AC have had plenty to shout about over the last fortnight, with four excellent individual performances across three different disciplines.
Beginning with the youngest athlete, Nicole Hoey (pictured right) competed for the club in the Meath Cross-Country League in Trim and put in a smashing run in the Girls Under-11 race.
After a brisk start Nicole steadily moved her way up through the field in a highly competitive and frenetic race to ensure a healthy finishing position and the opening cross-country league points for the club.
Later the same day Elizabeth Lee represented the club in the Women’s Senior 4k Cross-Country Championships and as always the event attracted the finest talent in the county and a highly competitiveetitive race enensued, with Trimm Castle providing a stunningnning backdrop.
Lee bettereded her previous attempts - over the distance when finishing in a very creditable time of 19:344 over the undulating udust course.
With the dustudust settling on thee Dublin Marathon, Eric Devine packed his bags to take part in the 2017 New York Marathon.
The seven-day turnaround from Dublin was always going to present a challechallenge, but the opportunitopportunity to take the sights aand sounds of one oof the most atmospheric mosatmospheric races aroaround was too gogood to pass upup. With places esplaces in New York bebeing limited and provided by ballballot, this was a once-in-a- onceshot. lifetime
In the end Devine showed no ill-effects from his Dublin exertions by running a fantastic 3hr 34min - a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that the early miles are very frenetic and clustered due to the large volume of athletes taking some time to thin out.
The performance rounded off a massively impressive year of PBs for the Duleek & District athlete.
In more local surroundings Peter Hearty made the short trip to one of his happy hunting grounds to take part in the Navan Parkrun. He finished second after running one of his fastest ever times over the course - 17:51.
