Winning cadettes teach 19s a lesson

-

OUR Lady’s College’s Under-16 Cadette A side picked up the school’s only victory in the latest round of matches in the SSA Leagues as their Under-19 teams both faltered.

On Thursday last Maryfield College made the journey to Greenhills from Drumcondra with two teams and first on the floor was the U-16 Cadette A Division 1 clash.

Both sides had the luxury of having two club players each, so a good contest was expected and first blood went to Our Lady’s as Lynn Victory went to the line early on after being fouled on her way to the basket.

Victory scored both and her side led 6-2 at quarter one and 18-5 at the half-way point, with Leah Bastianelli getting back to her best form.

Our Lady’s lost the third quarter 6-5, with their club player Ava Prendergast scoring all five of their points, but they finished the encounter strongly to complete a 34–19 success.

The Under-19B Division 2 match then took place and this proved to be very one-sided as they were up against Maryfield’s A team.

Despite leading 4-0 early on Our Lady’s were ultimately on the wrong end of a 59-15 scoreline, although in fairness they never gave up and Niamh Killeen in particular put on an excellent performance.

The Senior A team were rather more competitive in their match away to St Louis of Rathmines on Wednesday last.

The Drogheda girls trailed 11-5 after the first quarter and by the half-way stage in the match St Louis had racked up 23 points, 15 of them coming from their club player.

The Boynesiders never gave up, with Caoimhe Doherty particularly effective under her own boards as well as hitting two free throws just before the half-time break.

Emma White was also thorn in the side of St Louis, but while she was her team’s top scorer on the day it was not enough as the clock ran out with the host team 45-24 victors.

Their club player hit six three-pointers on her way to a wonderful personal haul of 35 points.
