December Music at the Gate cancelled due to roadworks

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

THE very popular Music At The Gate event has been cancelled for December because of the ongoing roadworks in the area.

The event, which has become a staple in the Drogheda music and entertainment calender since it was started by local musician Darragh O hEiligh some months ago, was due to take place this Saturday, December 9th.

The organisers said the decision was taken not to go ahead with the planned Christmas special because a suitable location to replace it couldn’t be found and they didn’t want to detract from the incredibly important Drogheda Homeless Aid Sleepout Fundraiser taking part in the town that day.

The next #MusicAtTheGate event will take place in January, and planning is already underway for what promises to be one of the biggest and best musical feasts yet.

The free trad music gigs, which initially started back in September when Darragh decided to mark the momentous occasion of the closure of Laurence’s Gate to traffic with an impromptu session, have grown in popularity and numbers with each passing month.

Hundreds of locals have attended each of the events to listen to the amazing music and take part in some dancing during the course of the morning.

In November, the organisers added a new feature to Music At The Gate with a very special guest slot for the last 45 minutes of the gig. World famous fiddle player Niall Murphy and guitar player with Lunasa Paul Meehan were given a very warm welcome when they took up residence in the guest slot on November 4th and it is hoped the guest musician feature will become a regular part of the event.
