Abbey Car Park to reopen this week for busy festive shopping period in town
THE Abbey Car Park will be open in time to facilitate the busy Christmas shopping rush, it has been revealed.
It is hoped the car park, which is centrally located, will reopen within the week once ownership has been transferred from the Court Service to the
OPW.
Louth County Council plan to licence the car park once the transfer is complete.
Local TD Fergus O’Dowd said the town centre carpark adjacent to the new courthouse will be open for the festive period.
‘ This will make a massive difference to traders in the town over the Christmas period,’ he said.
The car park, which is owned by the OPW, has been closed since work on the new courthouse began and it’s future use has remained uncertain.
Deputy O’Dowd said he had received a response from Louth
Conty Council, with whom he raised the matter, indicating that the large car park will be open for Christmas.
In correspondance with the local TD, the council said the Abbey Car Park is currently in the ownership of the Court Service and will transfer back to the OPW.
‘Louth County Council are in discussions with the OPW to licence the car park once the transfer is completed,’ said a spokesperson for the council.
‘It is hoped that the car park will reopen within the coming week, subject to the availability of contractors required to apply the necessary road markings and pay parking ticket machines.
