Four-midable DKIT storm to league glory

-

DKIT GMIT MAYO 4-16 0-9

DKIT stormed to league glory last week on a proper winters night at the home of the Westmeath champs St Lomans.

With the seniors missing out a final spot in Division 2, Craig Lynch’s second string were hoping to take home some silverware and they proved way too strong for GMIT Mayo.

Despite the final scoreline, it was very tight and tense affair in the opening stages.

But DKIT did look stronger, carrying the ball with huge energy and pace at the GMIT defence and with team captain Alan McCahey in top form GMIT did well to keep the deficit down to three points at half time.

With very little goal mouth action at either end the battle was fought around the middle of the pitch where Niall Keenan excelled and Lorcan Smyth caused the GMIT defence all sorts of problems.

But Conor Heneghan and Jonathan Concannon kept the Dundalk defence busy and Josh Lydon from Galway was in fine scoring form helping his side to adjourn just three points in arraers, 0-9 to 0-6.

The second half started with a flurry of goals from DKIT.

Similar to the semi final win over Jack O’Connor’s Kerry side impact sub Shea Hoey from Cullyhanna came on to bag an instant goal, winning possession in front of his man, turning him smartly and firing a bullet of a shot into the bottom corner of Owen Hoare’s net.

Straight from the kick-out Seamus McNally rose highest in the middle of the field to secure possession and launch another attack, which ended with Sean Marry aiming a tame shot at the keeper’s midriff, that somehow squeezed through his legs.

GMIT were dealt a hammer below moments later when their main scoring threat Jonathan Concannon received a straight red following a verbal altercation with an umpire.

From that point on Kirk, McCahey and a rampant DKIT half back line piled on the pressure.

With 10 minutes remaining Aaron Byrne and Jonny Donohoe came off the bench with the latter making his 50th appearance for the college. And he duly put the icing on the cake, losing his marker with some incredible movement and turning on a sixpence to strike a sweet left footed effort into Hoare’s top corner.
