OUTGOING vice chairman Peter O’Halloran and former coaching officer Eamonn Barry (Walterstown) are likely to battle it out to become the next chairman of the Meath County Committee at convention next Monday.

The winner will succeed Conor Tormey who has to vacate the position after completing a five-year term.

Outgoing secretary Francis Flynn, whose term also ends due to the five-year rule, is also nominated, but there are indications that the Seneschalstown clubman will be a non-runner.

Barry is also nominated for vice-chairman along with six other candidates, with Fé 18 chairman John Kavanagh (St Ultan’s) the frontrunner for the position.

Two positions already filled are that of secretary and treasurer. Mairead Delaney will be elected unopposed to become Meath’s first female county secretary, while Jim Mullery (Slane) will be returned unopposed to his role of treasurer.

Convention could be the end of an era for Francis Flynn if he decides not to contest any position after serving in various roles for more than 30 years. However, Flynn’s son Ciaran is in line to become the new PRO, in succession to Martin O’Halloran who has also completed a five-year term.

Paddy Kelly (Kiltale) will be seeking a fourth term as Central Council delegate but will face stiff opposition from Conor Tormey.
